Custom Hand Knitting for International Brands & Designers
For thirty years, Handknit India has produced and exported hand-knitted garments for fashion designers, retailers and yarn companies across the UK, Ireland, Europe, the USA and Japan. From Aran knitting for Ireland to Fair Isle for Scotland, we bring specialist craft knowledge, flexible production and export experience to your project.
An international history. A new chapter at home.
Thirty years knitting for the world.
Now closer to you in India.
Our experience was built through export work: interpreting designers’ ideas, working with clients’ own yarns and producing hand-knitted pieces for different markets and specifications. As we now introduce our work directly to customers in India, we bring that same depth of craftsmanship and international production experience to this new chapter.

Your ideas, beautifully knitted.
From your design to its destination.
We work with fashion brands, independent designers, yarn companies and retailers to develop hand-knitted garments with character, texture and considered detail. Garment development, hand-knitting production, pattern writing, yarn development and export logistics—practical expertise built over three decades of making for international clients.
01 / GARMENT PRODUCTION
Hand-Knitted Garments for Retail & Designer Collections
We produce hand-knitted garments for fashion brands, retailers and designers worldwide, specialising in Aran, Fair Isle and custom collections.
Our experience includes Aran knitting for Ireland, Fair Isle for Scotland and fashion garments for clients across the UK, Europe, the USA and Japan.
We work to your designs and specifications, producing individual styles or collections with varied sizes, colours and stitch patterns. You can supply your own yarns or discuss yarn development with us.
To discuss a project, share your designs, size specifications, quantities and delivery requirements.
02 / DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
From Line Drawing to Garment & Knitting Pattern
We turn your sketches and specifications into knitted garments, developing samples and writing the final knitting patterns for your designs.
We interpret designers’ line drawings and measurements to develop the garment’s stitch structure, shape and construction.
Through sampling, you can review proportions, texture and finishing before the design moves into production. We also write the final knitting pattern to document how the approved garment is made.
Begin with your sketches, measurements, preferred yarn and any stitch or finishing references.
03 / YARN COMPANIES
Display Garments & Knitted Samples
We knit display garments that showcase your yarns and patterns. No minimum order—from a single sample to 1,000 pieces with varied specifications.
We create shop-window display garments and presentation samples for hand-knitting yarn companies, helping customers see the colour, texture and stitch definition of a yarn in a finished piece.
Working with your yarns and patterns, we can make individual samples or multiple display sets. Different pieces can follow different specifications where required.
Share your patterns, yarn details, quantities and display or launch dates.
04 / INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS
Your Yarn In. Finished Garments Out.
We coordinate the import of your yarn into India and export of finished garments, including shipping documentation and customs-clearance support at both ends.
Most of our international clients supply their own yarns. We support the logistics of bringing those yarns into India for knitting and sending the finished products to their destination.
Our Government of India authorisation allows eligible yarn imports for export production without payment of customs duty at the time of import, subject to its terms.
Documentation, shipping arrangements and applicable charges are agreed for each project. Share the yarn’s origin, composition, quantity and the finished garments’ destination so we can discuss your requirements.
05 / BEYOND GARMENTS
Accessories, Interiors & Toys
We create hand-knitted accessories, home furnishings and toys—from caps and scarves to cushions and throws—made to your designs and specifications.
Our accessories include caps, mufflers, scarves and socks. For interiors, we knit cushions, throws, afghans, rugs, wall hangings and lampshades.
We also enjoy developing knitted toys, bringing personality to each piece through shape, colour and detail.
Bring your idea, sketch or reference, along with dimensions and intended use. We can discuss suitable yarns, construction and sample development.
06 / YARN DEVELOPMENT
Hand-Knitting Yarn Development
We develop hand-knitting yarns in cotton, silk, linen, merino and selected blends, tailored to the composition, texture and feel your project needs.
We develop yarns for knitting collections and individual projects, including cotton/linen and cotton/bamboo blends alongside cotton, silk, linen and merino.
Development starts with how you want the yarn to look, feel and perform in the finished piece. We discuss fibre composition, thickness, texture and intended use to establish your requirements.
Share your preferred yarn characteristics, a reference sample if available, and the quantity you have in mind.
Individual craft. Organised production.
The hands of a craft collective.
The systems of an export business.
Our strength lies in bringing detailed handwork together with the organisation needed for international orders. We use advanced, custom-built software to support our work across projects and differing specifications.
A one-piece display order and a larger production assignment call for different planning. Our experience helps us work with both, while keeping the individual design at the centre.
Craft with an international story.
Our work has taken many forms: display garments for yarn companies, fashion ranges developed with designers and special projects for international markets.
Our export history includes display garments for yarn companies, designer collections and special projects. The work below offers a closer look at the relationships behind that experience.

Rowan Yarns · England
Showing what a yarn can become.
Our work for Rowan includes hand-knitted display garments, bringing yarn and design together in a finished piece that people can see and appreciate. Each garment is an opportunity to show the expressive possibilities of hand knitting through texture, pattern and detail.

Coats & Clark · USA
Yarn brought to life.
Hand-knitted display garments developed through our work for Coats & Crafts in Europe, reflecting our longstanding experience with yarn companies.

Special projects · Japan
A different brief. The same care.
Special projects for Japan have included polo garments, adding another chapter to our international hand-knitting work.
Fashion projects
Our fashion garment work includes projects connected with Dun Store, Ireland, alongside collaborations with designers on their ranges.

Relationships knitted over time
Our export journey began thirty years ago with a first order from Stunduns, Galway—a beginning we continue to remember with gratitude. Handknit India began as IDI Exporters. Got first order from Donal Stunduns & Dom Burn of The Sweater Shop followed, helping us take our next steps into the world.
Working with designers
Your signature.
Our craftsmanship.
We have worked with designers to create their ranges, translating individual ideas into hand-knitted garments while respecting the character of each collection.
Bring us a clear direction or an idea still taking shape. The conversation begins with what you want to make.
