Every journey begins with someone willing to place their faith in you. For us, that first belief came from Donal Stundun of Stunduns, Galway, who gave us our first export order. Dom Burn of The Sweater Shop followed, helping us take our next steps into the world.
Their trust gave us more than work. It gave us confidence in our craft and the courage to grow.
Thirty years later, as we knit for brands, designers and yarn companies across the world, we remember those beginnings with gratitude
We started 30 years ago with the intention to provide support to women who had migrated because of militiancy in Kashmir. Many women from Kashmir knew how to knit & that is why the craft of hand knitting was chosen. But their skill level was poor. We trained them to enhance their skill level to best in the world. In no time women joined us through out North India & we grew to the network of 2000+ knitters with 30 knitting centres. Over the years we have grown into a world class hand knitting facility.
For three decades, we have manufactured and exported hand-knitted garments for international brands, designers and yarn companies.
We specialise in Aran knitting. We knit Fair Isle with ease. We work with some of the world’s best handknitting designers, develop knitting patterns and create window-display garments for yarn companies. We also develop handknitting yarns from natural fibres. And by the way, we are also very good at crochet. From interpreting a designer’s idea to ensuring consistent fit, finish and timely delivery, we bring skilled hands and careful coordination together.
We continue to manufacture and export for international clients while bringing our craft to a wider audience through Handknit India’s collections. Our commitment is to value skilled artisans, preserve their knowledge and inspire a new generation to wear and practise the craft.

Some stories are written in ink. Ours begin with yarn. At Handknit India, yarn turns to poetry through skilled hands that find peace in every stitch. The softening breath, the settling mind, the steady rhythm—for many of our knitters, this is a personal sadhna, patient and deeply human.
The joy of watching something beautiful take shape, the sharing of stories and the friendships formed along the way give this work its meaning. These bonds, and the care behind every piece, are the essence of Handknit India.
We are committed to the development of the craft of handknitting. for future generations. Through contemporary designs, knitting patterns and DIY kits, we invite more people to make handknitting part of their lives.
Wear the art or experience the joy of making it.

There is an art that predates machines, and it lives entirely in the hands. Long before knitting had patterns or names, fingers already knew, without being told, how much tension a stitch needs, how a loop should fall, how yarn wants to move. At Handknit India, this is the art we protect — not the finished piece, but the hand that made it. It was made by a hand, not a machine. Every claim we make about quality begins and ends with that one fact. Through our passion for craftsmanship, creativity, and timeless design, we create handcrafted knitwear and home collections that celebrate quality, authenticity, and heritage. We are committed to preserving traditional techniques, empowering artisan communities, and crafting pieces that bring warmth, beauty, meaning into everyday life with essence of modern fashion.

At Handknit India, work has brought us more than a livelihood. It has given us the joy of creating, sharing stories and finding comfort in one another’s company. For all of us, the love of knitting has been a wonderful stress buster—a quiet rhythm that helps everyday worries soften as something beautiful takes shape.
Our knitters have always been our strength. Their patience, dedication and pride in their craft have shaped everything we do. Over the years, we have woven friendships alongside garments, making this journey as much about belonging as it is about work.
Every history has a beginning small enough to be missed. Ours started with a handful of women, a handful of needles, and one stubborn belief: that a skill nearly lost to circumstance could still build a life. Twenty-five years ago, Handknit India began life as IDI Exporters — not a charity, not an experiment, but a working business built to support women displaced by the conflict in Kashmir. Many already knew how to knit; what they lacked was opportunity. We gave them both a name for their skill and a market for it, training that knowledge into Aran cables, Fair Isle colourwork, natural-fibre yarns, and a level of technical mastery few hand-knitting collectives anywhere can match. Over the years, that handful of women became a collective of 1,500, spread across 25 clusters. But if you ask what we actually learned in that time, it wasn’t really about technique. It was this: skill is only ever the surface. Underneath every stitch is rhythm. Underneath rhythm is focus. Underneath focus, quietly, is healing.

Building a handknitting enterprise across many clusters brought its own challenges. Each piece was made by an individual, yet every finished garment needed to meet a consistent standard of fit, finish and quality.
Training, interpreting complex designs, coordinating production and meeting export timelines required careful systems and close collaboration.
We learned to bring discipline to the process while respecting the pace and individuality of handwork. Those lessons, gathered over three decades, continue to guide us today.

Over the years, Handknit India has grown into a network of women working across knitting clusters in North India.
Together, we have developed the skills to create intricate Aran textures, beautiful Fair Isle patterns and finely crafted crochet. Our work has brought us into collaboration with leading international handknitting designers and yarn companies, creating garments, developing knitting patterns and making pieces for window displays.
Our growth is measured in the quality of our craft—and in the women who have grown alongside us.

Every recognition belongs to the many women whose skill and dedication have shaped Handknit India. It celebrates the care behind each garment and the years spent building this craft together.

For us, knitting reaches beyond the finished garment. There is pleasure in choosing a yarn, watching a pattern emerge and making something with your own hands.
It can offer a quiet moment of focus, a way to express yourself or a deeply personal gift for someone you love.
Through our knitting patterns and DIY kits, we want more people to experience that connection—whether they are picking up needles for the first time or returning to a much-loved craft.

Creating opportunities for women has been part of Handknit India from the beginning.
By building on an existing skill and providing training and access to work, we have helped women turn their craft into a source of income. Working through local clusters has connected their abilities with markets far beyond their immediate surroundings.
Our commitment is to recognise these women as skilled artisans, value their contribution and help their knowledge find a place in the next generation.

Today, Handknit India brings thirty years of experience to a renewed vision: making handknitting a valued part of contemporary fashion.
We want younger generations to discover the beauty of Aran cables, the character of handmade textures and the pleasure of wearing something made with time and care.
We continue to create, collaborate and share the craft—with those who love to wear it and those who want to learn it.
Wear the art—or experience the joy of making it.

To preserve India’s rich knitting heritage by carrying this craft forward — not as a relic of the past, but as something anyone, of any age or gender, can pick up today and make their own. We believe hand-knitting and crochet are not “grandmother’s crafts.” They’re a form of stillness the modern world happens to need more than ever, and we intend to hand that stillness to a wider circle of hands than it’s ever reached before.
Thirty years on, our mission hasn’t changed, even as everything around it has: standing beside artisans, uplifting them through craft, and keeping a tradition of Indian hand-knitting alive — for the people who inherited it, and for everyone we’re now inviting to learn it fresh.
To become the world’s most respected handcrafted lifestyle brand, known for preserving heritage, empowering artisans, and proving that a centuries-old craft can still feel entirely of the present moment.
In a world of fast fashion, we chose the slower thread — because luxury was never about speed. It lingers, in the softness that stays, the texture that asks to be touched, the design meant to be lived in rather than merely worn. True luxury was never about how fast something could be made, or how widely it could sell. It was always about how much of a human hand you could still feel in the final piece. So we make less, and we make it slower, on purpose.
